Applications


The Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) provides a set of applications designed for different end-users (e.g. policy makers, funding agencies, protected area agencies and managers, and researchers). Current applications can be used to assess the state of and pressure on protected areas (DOPA Explorer), and the level and location of international biodiversity funding (eConservation). Using global reference datasets, the DOPA applications support global assessments but also aim to provide a broad range of consistent and comparable indicators at country, ecoregion and protected area level.


Application: DOPA Explorer 2.0 (Beta) provides simple means to explore protected areas, identify those with most unique ecosystems and species composition and assess the pressures they are exposed to through human development. DOPA Explorer is a web-based assessment tool where information on more than 20,000 protected areas, covering more than 95% of the global protected surface, has been processed automatically to generate a set of indicators on ecosystems, climate, species and pressures at site, country and ecoregion levels. DOPA Explorer can help identify the protected areas with most unique ecosystems and the species that have lowest level of protection, and assess the pressures they are exposed to because of human development.

Application: eConservation is a new application providing critical information on biodiversity conservation projects worldwide in an interactive mapping interface. The service is mainly designed to understand who is doing what and where in conservation and thus we hope to improve decision-making on biodiversity conservation. eConservation provides means to collect, share and search information on biodiversity conservation projects on a global scale. Projects can be searched based on their location, objectives, timeframe, budget, the organizations involved, etc. By collecting information on both past and present projects, we hope to improve the reuse of project results and lessons learned.

 

Languages: eConservation Beta is available in English.

 

Release: A prototype is available since January 2015.
