Subtarget: 1.2 - Legally protect a minimum of 30% of the EU's sea area

Indicator: 1.2.1 - Marine protected area coverage

This indicator measures the percentage of marine waters, by Member State and at EU 27 level, covered by protected areas. It considers both nationally protected areas and Natura 2000 sites. Values are calculated and provided every year by the European Environment Agency based on data reported by Member States.

Indicator: 1.2.2 - Natura 2000 marine protected area coverage

This indicator provides the percentage of marine waters, by Member State and at EU 27 level, covered by Natura 2000 sites designated under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives. Values are calculated and provided each year by the European Environment Agency based on data reported by the Member States.

Target 2 - Strictly protect at least a third of the EU’s protected areas, including all remaining EU primary and old-growth forests.

Indicator under development.

Target 3 - Effectively manage all protected areas, defining clear conservation objectives and measures, and monitoring them appropriately.

Indicator under development.

EU NATURE RESTORATION PLAN

Target 4 - Legally binding EU nature restoration targets to be proposed in 2021, subject to an impact assessment. By 2030, significant areas of degraded and carbon-rich ecosystems are restored. Habitats and species show no deterioration in conservation trends and status; and at least 30% reach favourable conservation status or at least show a positive trend.
Subtarget: 4.1 - Species show no deterioration in conservation trends and status
Indicator: 4.1.1 - Common bird index by type of species

This indicator is a multi-species index measuring changes in population abundances at EU level of all common bird species (n=168) as well as those associated with specific habitats: common farmland bird species (n=39) and common forest bird species (n=34).The three indices give estimated bird numbers relative to the reference year 1990, when their value is set at 100. Values are calculated every year by the European Bird Census Council through the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme programme, based on data from citizen science, and further provided by Eurostat.

Bringing nature back to agricultural land

Target 5 - The decline of pollinators is reversed.

Indicator: 5.0.1 - Grassland butterfly index

This indicator is an index measuring changes in population abundance at EU level of 17 grassland butterfly species, using 1991 as reference year. Values are calculated every year by the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme partnership, distributed by the European Environmental Agency, and further provided by Eurostat.

Target 6 - The risk and use of chemical pesticides is reduced by 50%, and the use of more hazardous pesticides is reduced by 50%.

Indicator under development.

Target 7 - At least 10% of agricultural area is under high-diversity landscape features.

Indicator under development.

Target 8 - At least 25% of agricultural land is under organic farming management, and the uptake of agro-ecological practices is significantly increased.
Subtarget: 8.1 - At least 25% of agricultural land is under organic farming management
Indicator: 8.1.1 - Area under organic farming

This indicator measures the percentage of total utilised agricultural area, by Member State and at EU level, occupied by organic farming. It includes both existing organically-farmed areas and areas in the process of conversion. Values are calculated and provided every year by Eurostat based on data provided by the Member States.
